Upgrading

Upgrading components in your system unit yourself, can be a rewarding but challenging experience. If you decide to take this road keep the following points in mind:

Whatever the upgrade on your system unit, you will follow these similar steps:

  1. Unplug your PC.
  2. Unscrew the cover.

Most PCs have 4 to 6 screws. A nut driver, or Phillips screwdriver will usually do the trick.

  3. Remove the system unit cover. Usually, you slide it back and lift it straight up.
  4. Ground yourself! That is, touch something metal like your system unit cover. This will discharge any static electricity that is hanging around your person.

Be careful not to shuffle your feet, or scratch your head while you are working. This will cause you to pick up more static electricity which could zap your PC. It takes a very small amount of static electricity to zap a PC component. So be careful!

  5. Remove the old component if necessary.
  6. Install the new component.
  7. Set dip switches and jumpers, if necessary.

You may have to change a dip switch from on to off, or move a jumper from one pin to another.

  8. Install appropriate software.
  9. Replace the cover, but don't screw it on.
  10. Plug in your PC, and try it out.
  11. If it works screw the cover down. If not, turn off your PC, remove the cover and try again.

That's the general run down. Remember, upgrading a PC is not for the faint of heart!
